Like other long-term conditions such as diabetes or asthma, alcoholism can
be controlled with a combination of medication and lifestyle change. Unlike
older treatments such as Antabuse® (disulfiram), the latest medications
have few unpleasant side effects.
When you arrive at Assisted Recovery, a physician will quickly conduct blood
and liver tests and a psychiatric evaluation. The next step is to begin medications
that will relieve withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, sleeplessness, and
tremors.
During this time, you will spend a half-day at the clinic, returning home
in the evening with a friend or family member. Now, you’re ready for
the next phase: about six months of anti-craving
medications such as ReVia® (naltrexone)
or Campral® (acamprosate), along with relapse-prevention
counseling.
