Naltrexone has been often described as a perfect drug. Naltrexone is a unique medication, in the fact that it does not “treat” a disorder, rather it creates the circumstances that allows treatment to take place. The unique features – no positive reinforcement or ‘high’ when the pill is ingested or negative effects like withdrawal when a dose is skipped, makes compliance notoriously poor. Indeed, poor compliance is the most common reason cited for not using this medication. As a result, naltrexone was often restricted to ‘motivated’ patients like healthcare professionals.

Vivitrol is the answer to the long-felt need of treatment professionals to deliver naltrexone in an extended-release formulation that tips the ambivalence about recovery towards successful treatment. The FDA-approval of Vivitrol has allowed a wide spectrum of patients to benefit from the unique pharmacology of naltrexone.

Vivitrol uses a proprietary formulation, similar to absorbable sutures, in encasing the naltrexone in microscopic biodegradable spheres that slowly dissolve and release the naltrexone in precise amounts into the blood stream. The effects of Vivitrol last for a full month! Vivitrol is given as an injection into the gluteal muscles. The naltrexone binds with the opiate receptors and prevents endorphins from activating the same receptors and causing the ‘high’.

Menzies cautions that Vivitrol as is the case with oral naltrexone, it is not the be-all, end-all of treatment. Patients need to be engaged in individual, group and family counseling for long-term success. Most patients stay on Vivitrol for 6-12 months.
